Fireworks Goodness: Qrayg’s Fw PNG Week Project (+ a Tip on Filename Conventions)

Craig Erskine's Fw PNG Week Project

In March of 2010, Craig Erskine (a.k.a., qrayg.com) set out to create PNG vector files and offer them for free download to the Adobe Fireworks community. Ten months later, his Fw PNG Week project has consistently grown into a solid collection of 48 52 Fireworks vector resources, ideal for designers of application interfaces, websites, logos and icons.

My personal favorites are from weeks 22, 33 and 42. Check out the entire series to pick out your own. He also has some (older, but more fleshed out) tutorials for Fireworks users.

Off-topic tip: use an ‘intermediary file extension’ to help you distinguish your Fireworks PNGs from your regular PNGs. Craig uses .fw.png in his PNG Week downloads; I used to use .fwx.png, but have recently switched to .fw.png, as well. You can even go version-specific, as in .fw.cs4.png, but depending on your needs, that might seem a tad overboard.

  • I’m an advocate of the .fw.png naming convention as well. Funny you mention you used to use .fwx.png, I used to use .fx.png for awhile for some reason, until I encountered other people using .fw.png and realized there is no “x” in Fireworks. :)

    • I wish it were default on Fireworks that whenever you Save as Fireworks PNG, your files automatically get the ‘fw.png’ extension. I vaguely remember suggesting this very feature during a previous beta program.

Nonetheless, I’m glad to see others doing the same thing.
