Twitter Sleuthing: Too Many Poets

thepoet: Who is this @JasmineTiy and why is he/her/it they keep on spamming @thepoet in their twit. I don’t even know what they are saying.

JasmineTiy: How comes there’s 2 @thepoet iz dat even possible

thepoet: @twitter f*d up big time on the username. there’s two @thepoet @thePOET so that’s why i’m getting all these replies who I don’t even know

brownspank: @thepoet wow I never knew #twitter usernames were case-sensitive… that opens up a whole new avenue of celeb duping.

Fact: I’m a n00b who lives under a rock for not knowing about this until today.

kaffee: @thepoet couldn’t you block the user?

thepoet: @brownspank I know.

kaffee: the case of the CasEs> @thepoet this is an interesting point regarding usernames…. i am no celeb but inclined to search for other kaffees

scrufus: @thepoet there are? going to twitter.com/thePOET brings me to your profile page.

brownspank: @kaffee Good luck going through all the 2^6 permutations. :) (Did I get my #math right?)

thepoet: @scrufus there is. http://twitter.com/theP0ET

Theory: Georgia’s zero and lowercase O look very similar, causing confusion.

brownspank: @thepoet That’s not an O, it’s a zero. :)

thepoet: @brownspank I still get @thepoet replies from the people who in his lst. I am guessing the other guy replaced the O to 0

Theory: @theP0ET previously had the username @thePOET (and didn’t have a problem with it thanks to Twitter’s username case sensitivity bug-slash-feature). He may have just recently changed it, causing @mentions of the old username (that followers had already gotten used to) to default to @thepoet (again, due to the case sensitivity issue).
